Sedimentary
Rocks

Sedimentary rocks are formed three ways.

1.    Particles of weathered rocks or sediments compact to form solid rock-- detrital formation.

Shale, Siltstone, Sandstone, Breccia are examples of detrital sedimentary rocks.

2.    Dissolved minerals precipitating out and forming solid rock -- chemical formation.

Travertine and Coal, are examples of chemical sedimentary rocks.

  1. 3.   Sediment derived by biological processes that compacted forming solid rock -- Biogenic formation.

Fossils are found in sedimentary rocks.
